Sightline Institute is a not-for-profit research and communication center--a think tank--based in Seattle. Founded in 1993 by Alan Durning, Sightline's mission is to bring about sustainability, a healthy, lasting prosperity grounded in place. Our focus is Cascadia, or the Pacific Northwest.

It's a slow-motion revolution, but it's happening. Since 1993, we've equipped northwesterners with the research and tools they need to make progress on a range of solutions, from banning toxic chemicals that have shown up in our food and our bodies to defeating ruinous land-use ballot measures across the Northwest in 2006 and 2007.

Nonpartisan and wholly independent, Sightline's only ideology is commitment to the shared values of community, fairness, responsibility, and opportunity.

Provide daily updates on the news you need: Sightline runs a daily news service called Sightline Daily (formerly Tidepool.org). Our editors post the top sustainability headlines form the region every day by 9am--providing northwesterners who want to make a difference with the news they need. Our Daily Score blog--penned by our research staff--adds expert commentary and original analysis on issues from gasoline prices to the eternal question of paper vs. plastic.

Measure what matters: Launched in 2004, Sightline's Cascadia Scorecard project--which the Seattle Times called "a pioneering attempt to assess life in the Pacific Northwest across a broad array of measures"--monitors the region's progress on seven key regional trends. We update the Scorecard in an annual book, in reports on critical issues, such as pollution in people, and on our blog.

Champion the best solutions: We identify and promote the most important long-term solutions for the region, such as development that leads to stronger, safer communities; a more equitable tax system; and market-oriented policy changes that reward consumers for sustainable choices.

Create maps and other tools for a better Northwest: Are you concerned about the future of your community? Then we probably have a tool for you--from data to maps and other graphics to our news service that updates you on the top regional news every morning.
