Volunteer with Sightline
Information about volunteering with Sightline, plus descriptions of current volunteer projects.
Sightline could not accomplish its mission without the help of volunteers.
Current opportunities are listed below. Please let the contact person know how many hours a week you are available, your background, and what sort of projects interest you. See our internship page as well. Contact Mieko Moody for general inquiries: mieko@sightline.org.
- Google analytics expert! (posted 10/07): Sightline uses Google Analytics to track our web traffic and goals and we could use help customizing our use of Analytics so we can more effectively track key online metrics (goals, filters, etc.)
- Search engine optimization (reposted 10/07): Sightline needs help identifying keywords and "optimizing" certain pages and sections so that we rank higher on searches on our priority issues. If you understand SEO and want to help, contact Elisa Murray, elisa@sightline.org, 206-447-1880, ext. 111. Experience with Plone, our content management system, is helpful.
- Website updating: If you're comfortable entering and editing information in databases, editing graphic files, and other various website production tasks, we'd love your help! Experience with Plone is especially useful. Contact Elisa Murray, elisa@sightline.org, 206-447-1880, ext. 111.
- Flash animations: Sightline is looking for a volunteer with expertise in Macromedia Flash to help us create compelling animations that dramatize some of our research. (See an example of an animation of air pollution at Mount Rainier.) Ideally, the volunteer would have a solid background in Flash animations and Web design, and would be adept at making recommendations about how to create simple, compelling animations out of fairly complex materials, such as our sprawl research. Contact Elisa Murray, elisa@sightline.org, 206-447-1880, ext. 111.
- Mailing volunteers: Several times a year, Sightline sends mailings to its 750+ members. These mailings include charitable appeals, publications (books, newsletters), or event invitations. We'd like to develop a corps of volunteers who would like to help, as available, with these sporadic projects. Volunteer tasks include:
- Folding letters and stuffing envelopes with letters/books/newsletters/etc.
- Sealing envelopes
- Adding postage
- Delivering mail to post office
Mailings occur, roughly, during spring (early and late), late summer, September, and November. They may also arise spontaneously at other times of the year. For mailings, we need volunteers who have stellar attention to detail and can help out during regular business hours (8:30am - 5:30pm), for a minimum of two hours (often longer, according to our need and the volunteer's availability). We also sometimes hold after-hours mailing parties for staff and volunteers-these parties include food. Contact Stacey Panek, stacey@sightline.org, 206-447-1880, ext. 107.
- Outfitting Sightline: Sightline would like to update our office with new workstations. In order to meet our design requirements and stay within our budget, we’ve come to the conclusion that the best solution is to build them ourselves. But, we need your help! We need a few super volunteers to fill a few roles; project manager, skilled carpenter, etc. If you have skills, experience, energy or enthusiasm to contribute to this project contact Mieko at mieko(at)sightline.org for a full project description.
- Office Volunteer: We often have general administrative tasks for volunteers to help out with. Desired qualifications for volunteers include a willingness to do a wide range of tasks, interest in environmental issues, reliability, and initiative. Benefits include reimbursement for transportation to our office, personal satisfaction, and frequent chocolate. Hours are flexible. Contact mieko(at)sightline.org.
