Cascadia Scorecard News--June 2004
Differences in life expectancy throughout the Northwest; Sustainable forests and good timber practices; Laura Retzler's bike trip from coast to coast.
06/01/2004The Northwest provides a natural laboratory on longevity because of striking differences in lifespan not just across borders, but across county lines. Residents of British Columbia can expect to live two and a half years longer than their counterparts in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho: 80.7 years in BC, versus about 78.2 in the Northwest states. But there is an even larger difference in life expectancy-three years-between neighboring Washington and Multnomah counties in Oregon. It might be
tempting to attribute the difference in life expectancy to the stresses
and risks of city living, or to some failure in medical care. But the
far likelier explanation is the discrepancy in poverty levels. Find out
how your county stacks up. Read more here. Scorecard in Action: What's green and good for the economy? It's not cash. . . To
