03/13/2007 Your Money or Your JobIt’s high times for the region’s economy, at least according to the standard gauges. Despite a recent decline, Northwest stocks are up. Our region’s GDP is up too. But other measures (including Sightline’s economic security index) show average northwesterners are no better off than they were a decade ago. With our economy on the line, can we trust the conventional wisdom about the trends and the cures? Sightline takes a look at the notion that raising the minimum wage hurts employment, and finds that the conventional wisdom comes up short. Read more. One Year Later: The car-less experiment A year has passed since the Durning family decided to go car-less for the next 365 days. In that time, they’ve reduced their driving by two-thirds, burned 80 percent less gasoline, and saved a heap of money.
