The ups and downs of the Dow Jones, consumer confidence, and housing prices are a steady drumbeat in the media. But are ordinary Northwest families better off?

While the Dow rose nearly ten-fold since the mid-1980s, middle-class incomes for northwesterners barely budged. If the most-often-recited economic measures only tell us a part of the story, how can we expect to know what strategies might improve the daily lives of northwesterners?
