| How to Curb Climate Change What are the three top factors when trying to reduce our climate-changing emissions? Transportation, transportation, and transportation. In the Northwest states, 53 percent of our combined CO2 emissions from fossil fuels stem from transportation uses including commute traffic, freight, and planes. Our transportation sector produces more than three times as much climate pollution as electricity production does. See charts for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Sightline is investigating the smartest choices for curbing our emissions from transportation, solutions that are good for the climate and for people. Check out our Climate Policy Project, and our blog series Climate Policy for Smarties. Speaking of climate and transportation, we’ve recently heard the claim that adding lanes to crowded highways could reduce overall emissions by keeping cars from idling in traffic. Sightline crunched the numbers and found the claim to be off. Each extra one-mile stretch of lane added to a congested highway will increase climate-warming CO2 emissions more than 100,000 tons over 50 years. The analysis has implications for road-building projects such as Proposition 1 in Puget Sound and the Gateway Project in BC. Go to the report. Neighborhood Pride Got a real estate site?
