Northwest Land-Use Initiatives in 2006

There's a rash of land-use initiatives on the ballot this fall. Here's what's happening in your region.

Cascadia Scorecard News
September 2006

There's a rash of land-use initiatives on the ballot this fall. The initiatives are copy-cats of Oregon's disastrous Measure 37, and they threaten to severely impair communities' ability to plan for the future. They will also likely cost taxpayers billions of dollars and may unfairly put neighbors at the mercy of irresponsible developers.

Here's what's happening in your region:

Idaho: Proponents gathered enough signatures to put Proposition 2 on the state ballot in November. Idaho Smart Growth is gathering a coalition to oppose the measure.

Montana: Amidst a flurry of accusations of money laundering and campaign finance breaches, Initiative 154 will appear on state ballots.

Washington: Voters will see Initiative 933 on their ballots, by far the most aggressive--and just plain loony--of all the pay-or-waive measures.

California: Napa County voters defeated Measure A this year, but now a statewide ballot measure, Proposition 90, threatens California's communities.

Outside the Northwest, voters in both Nevada and Arizona will face their own Measure 37 copycats.

Write a letter to your local newspaper editor about these initiatives.
