Despite a sputtering economy, Northwest drivers used more gasoline in 2009, reversing a decade-long trend of declining personal gas consumption. British Columbia saw a startling 10 percent increase in per-capita gasoline consumption.

Total gasoline consumption in the Northwest states fell by 180 million gallons between 2007 and 2008. Per-capita use followed a decade-long trend of decline. The Northwest states are outpacing the rest of the nation by nearly 10 percent.

Braking News: Gas Consumption Goes Into Reverse


From 1999 to 2007, the Northwest states have cut back on per-person gasoline consumption by 11 percent, good news for the climate and our pocketbooks. Moreover, the Northwest is outpacing the nation in cutting back on gasoline.

Wildlife Indicator - Gray Wolves


Sightline's wildlife index tracks gray wolves, which once ranged across most of the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Northwest before they were hunted to extinction. The west was wolfless until the mid-1990s, when small populations were re-introduced.

Wildlife Indicator - Caribou


Caribou are highly endangered in the lower 48 United States and British Columbia. The remaining population in the Northwest consists of the tiny Selkirk herd, which occupies a small area of northeast Washington, northern Idaho, and an adjacent portion of BC.
