Free Use Policy

Reprint, reuse, and recycle our publications, graphics, and tools--free of charge. All you need to do is register with us.

Sightline’s work is free to use. We encourage you to use it freely and share it widely!

Sightline Institute holds copyrights to its books, reports, articles, Daily Score weblog posts, maps, charts, graphs, tables, animations, and all other original content found on the Sightline websites, unless otherwise noted. By downloading, purchasing, or otherwise acquiring our work, you agree to the following policy and as such are free to copy, distribute, and display Sightline’s work, subject to the following conditions:

Attribution

You must attribute the work you are using to Sightline Institute. This attribution, or notice of copyright, may be in the form of our logo (maps, charts, and graphs available from this site include the logo already), or in text form similar to the following:

“From [title of book, report, article, blog post, or web page], by [author or Sightline Institute], copyright [year] Sightline Institute, Seattle; used with permission.”

If you are posting the work online, you must include a link back to where the work is posted on the Sightline website, or otherwise to www.sightline.org.

Noncommercial vs. commercial use

You may use our work for noncommercial use. If you would like to use it for commercial purposes (e.g. in a book, online or magazine or newspaper, fee-based website, or in support of any other commercial venture), you may ask for written permission from Sightline Institute (see "Permission" below).

Derivative works

You may use only verbatim copies or excerpts of our work, not derivative or modified versions of it.

Maps, charts, and other graphics

Many of our maps, charts, tables, animations, and other graphics are available for free download--in our Maps & Graphics Center (high-resolution versions require free registration). You may distribute and display these electronically and in print for non-commercial purposes without our written permission, though please let us know how you are using our work.

Text-based work

Most of our books, reports, articles, blog posts, and other original written work are available for free viewing or download on Sightline's websites (some require free registration). If you would like to re-publish, online or in print, in whole or in part, any of our text-based work, you must get written or email permission from Sightline Institute (see "Permission" below).

Daily Score Reposting

We encourage reposting Sightline materials on your website or blog, but we do ask that you credit us appropriately. When reposting our materials, please:

    • include the author’s name in the intro text or as a byline
    • include reference to Sightline Institute
    • include an active link to Sightline’s original post or page
    • inform Sightline that you plan to repost before you do

A reference might look like this, to be included at the beginning or end of the repost:

“The post is by Eric de Place, senior researcher, of the Sightline Institute. It originally appeared on Sightline’s Daily Score blog.”

Permission

While Sightline does not charge for use of its copyrights, we do require permission in some cases (see above).  To obtain permission, please send an email to Christine Winckler at ask-us@sightline.org. One exception: Sierra Club Books owns the rights to our book Seven Wonders, so you need to check with them for permission to reprint excerpts. Fax your request with the pertinent information to 415-977-5792, or mail to:
