What are we spending?
The Northwest spent $19.3 billion, a new record, to import petroleum and natural gas in 2006, the last year with complete data. (1) Adjusted for inflation, that’s 13 percent over 2005. State by state in 2006 we spent:
Washington $12.8 billionOregon $7.0 billionIdaho $2.7 billion
What does that add up to?
- 4 percent of the Northwest states' entire economic output--money that could have been in circulation in our local economies. (2)
- More than the total spending in the Northwest states on public K-12 education in 2006. (3)
- More than total 2006 spending on hospital care in Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. (4)
