Killer Transit Apps

SwatchJunkies

September 28, 2011

Are you in the market for a new apartment that lets you get to work faster and with less impact on the planet? There’s an app for that.

The geniuses at Walk Score just released a super-nifty new system for finding apartments within a certain travel time of your workplace, letting you select whether you want to commute on transit, by bike, on foot, or in a car. Check out Tech Crunch’s coverage, or just watch the video demo:

In addition to helping you scan for apartments, it gives an easy-to-understand visualization of how far transit can take you.

And if you need some help figuring out how much money you can save if you travel by transit, bike, or on foot vs. a car…well, there’s an app for that too. Reroute.it, created by Code for America programmer Aaron Ogle, helps you understand the hit that car travel can take on your pocketbook—as well as the good things that biking and walking can do for your waistline and the climate. To learn more, check out Code for America’s article, or try the free app.

Finally, if you really want to read lots of “there’s an app for that” jokes, there’s an app for that, too.  Thanks, internet!
